What are the Safest States?

Let’s break down the three safest driving states:

State

Fatal Accidents Per Year

Number of Traffic Deaths per 100,000 People

Massachusetts

334

4.9

New York

931

5.2

Washington, D.C.

It may surprise you to see New York so high on this list, as their number of fatal accidents is so high. And it may also surprise you to see  Washington D.C. so low since the number of fatal accidents per year is so low. However, we must focus on the number of traffic deaths in relation to the population. New York has a much higher population than Washington, D.C. Therefore, we should expect that they will have more fatal accidents per year. These statistics measure safety by the number of traffic deaths per 100,000 people. This makes Massachusetts the lowest at 4.9.

What are the Most Dangerous States?

Of course, if we look at the safest states, we also want to look at the most dangerous states. Let’s break down the three most dangerous states for driving.

State

Mississippi

25.4

Wyoming

Note that these statistics are measured per month rather than per year. However, the rates are still much higher than the three safest states by far.

Why are Some States More Dangerous to Drive In?

Statistics show us that many of the most dangerous states for driving are in the southern part of the United States. Why is this? Rural roads and less strict safety laws are the main reasons attributed to these fatalities. Montana has a stretch of roadway considered the most dangerous in the nation. Fleet drivers must protect themselves at all times, particularly when traveling in these states.
